Turkey as an alternative for Spain and Italy?
Turkey will be this year again gaining on marketshare at the expense of Spain and Italy. Due to the Covid-19 virus Spain and Italy have difficulties to find harvest workers. Turkey has been for several years an alternative for fruit harvested in the Mediterrean region, but the virus seems to give them an extra advantage. At the beginning of the crisis Turkey had a lot of difficulties with the extra logistical capacity, but it seems the biggest issues are behind. Soon the first Turkish cherries will arrive followed by figs, grapes and pomegranates. On the other hand they expect bigger consequences of the virus in Turkey still to come in the second half of the year. But in the meantime it seems Turkey will have also this year a growth in their export volumes on fruit.
